Last week, AKEDA was thrilled to partner with Dr. Allison Nitsch, Lead Physician at ACUTE, the world's only Center of Excellence dedicated to treating patients with extreme medical conditions of eating disorders and severe malnutrition. Dr. Nitsch was incredibly busy during her visit, delivering five presentations over just three days, and engaging local providers and community partners. Her presentations covered screening for eating disorders; common medical complications of restriction, malnutrition and purging; and determining when someone needs to be hospitalized.
We kicked off our Alaska tour in Fairbanks, where our Co-Founder and Board Officer, Beth Rose, joined Dr. Nitsch to share valuable information about AKEDA’s resources and programs. The activities in included a community presentation in Fairbanks, coordinated by Crisis Now and CalmKey Telehealth Connections; and a presentation to Foundation Health Partners medical staff. Other highlights of our week included a visit to learn about Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium's (ANTHC) Behavioral Health Program; and presentations to Providence Alaska and ANTHC medical and behavioral staff.
In between the Fairbanks presentations, Dr. Nitsch and Beth had the unique opportunity to walk with the reindeer at Running Reindeer Ranch!
After her visit Dr. Nitsch said, "I am grateful to AKEDA for coordinating this week of outreach in Alaska. We know most doctors get minimal training on caring for people with eating disorders, including how to manage these folks medically and how to get them the help they need when they are ready to leave the hospital. Thank you AKEDA for helping me connect with Alaskans and share my knowledge to help people get the care they need."
A special thank you to Dr. Nitsch for sharing her expertise and commitment to helping others, and to our partners, including the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority. If you or someone you know is in need of support or resources related to eating disorders, please don’t hesitate to reach out to AKEDA.
